23andMe Reaches Out to Mommy Bloggers

23andMe launched a fee online community on March 31 for moms and women that will gather information about pregnancy for research purposes. 23andMe is a personal genetics company. As part of its communications effort, which it gets it support for Rubenstein Communications, 23andMe brought in 14 mommy bloggers who are blogging on the company site about their participation in the online community.

The manager of communications for 23andMe, Rachel Cohen said “It’s the first time the company has reached out to mommy bloggers. There’s really a gap in the online wealth of information about very scientific information about pregnancy. That fits in perfectly with what we’re trying to do.

To generate awareness about the community, the communications team is using Twitter, Facebook, and also announced the launch on Good Morning America.

23andMe, like I mentioned before, is a personal genetics company that provides genotyping services directly to the consumer. It was founded by Linda Aver and Anne Wojcicki and the funders include Google and Genentech.

“23andMe believes that genetic research tools can and should be used to give us a deeper understanding of the role genes play in our individual lives. By using advances in DNA analysis and offering education, tools, and expertise, they want to help others take a bold, informed step toward self-knowledge. “-23andMe website.

23andMe’s Pregnancy Community is free unlike other services they have such as 23andMe Parkinson’s Community.

Members of 23andMe Pregnancy Community can take weekly quizzes about specific health issues that occur in pregnancy such as morning sickness, weight gain, drug reactions, and food craving. With the results they are about to compare themselves to other pregnant women and mothers.

Before reading this article I had no knowledge of 23 and me. But after browsing through the site I found a lot of good and interesting information. If provides it’s using with unique ways of finding information about your health through the use of DNA as well as your own ancestry.
They also provide a Genetics 101 with tons of answered questions that can help someone get more familiar with how genetics plays a huge role in our lives.

And to add the 23andMe Pregnancy Community is great. Moms can help moms to be, have a good and healthy pregnancy. I think that this is a great site for women that are going through her first pregnancy.

  1. Yeah I'd agree - that sounds especially helpful for first time mothers. And the free part is good for those soon to be mothers with lower income.
I wonder how many people do know about this site - like you mentioned, they announced it on Good Morning America, and they have Facebook and Twitter - so they must be posted stuff there too. Which would be good - get the word out. It seems like a really good idea.
    Good Post

  3. It is amazing what groups are using Twitter and Facebook. I know that for our Golf Tournament for the Junior League of Boca Raton has a Facebook page and that we are constantly sending out to people to join the group event. This is one way of raising awareness with on-line networking.

I think it is great that non-profits can use technology to spread the message of their organization with out having to spend money on marketing and advertising. Which organizations know if the most costly items in process of raising money.

It is nice to hear a personal statement from someone who uses technology to become more informed and spread the word about the needs of an organization and how others can help the agency.

  4. I think this is a great thing. It is something that I would even consider using at a later point in my life. I think that this is probaly something new to a lot of people but it for sure wont take long for people to hear about it and start using it. Using when something is on a show like Good Morning America then it will be on another talk show as well. Word will travel fast and this will be well known before we know it.
