VCSU Communication

I have never really experienced anything like what I experienced this year with the flood. I’m originally from southwest Minnesota where nothing exciting happens EVER! So, although the flood in Valley City was very stressful at points it was still amazing to be a part of everything. I think that it’s crazy that when our grandchildren are in school they will be talking about the Flood of 09 and that we were actually there, fighting it.

I think that Valley City themselves did a great job communicating with the community. I also think that Valley City State University did a great job keeping the students informed. They played middle man for students and staff throughout the whole flood.

With that, I’ve decided to do my Crisis Research Project on Valley City State’s communication process throughout the whole flood. I want to find out how they communicated with the city and how they communicated with us. I also want to find out the communication between students and professors. How is the communication a factor with having all classes online? I also would like to know how and why Dr. Shirley made the decisions he did. Did he communicate with anyone else with his decisions? Another thing that would be interesting to find out is if VCSU had a crisis plan. Knowing that they are located in a town that has a very good chance of having a flood did they have a plan written up or was all the decisions and planning a day by day thing?

I plan to interview Dr. Shirley for the majority of the project. But for the other parts I also want to interview students and professors.
